Tipjoy Bookmarklet - leave a tip for any site, while you're on it

Try this bookmarklet for Tipjoy.

Drag this link to your toolbar: tip this

On IE, right-click and select "Add to Favorites" and add to the "Links" folder.

Click it, and it will load a tip button on any page you're on. You don't have to go to tipjoy.com to submit URLs.

I tested it under FireFox, Safari, & Camino on OS X 10.5, and IE 7 on Windows XP -- not exactly comprehensive. If you have a problem, please let me know.

UPDATE: We updated the code at 6pm PST 2/25; grab it again if you got it before then

O'Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing Conference 2008

We gave our talk last night at the O'Reilly TOC conference.
The presentation went very well. We even made it into the TOC Flickr photoset :)

I'll post a link to the slides soon.

Overall, we've had several interesting conversations with bloggers and web application developers while here. Looks like we'll have a few new partners to work with as we develop our 'platform' offering, which will allow a platform to share in the tip profits of the authors/content providers working for them. If there are others out there interested in participating, please send us an email.

It's been a challenge to keep on top of all feedback from our hotel room, but I think it has been going well. We've got some really great users out there!

crunched

so we got techcrunched a bit earlier than we expected! We just spent the last hour fixing bugs and responding to feedback from the floor of the Dallas apt. Now I'm blogging from the runway - our flight is delayed.
Anyway, if you sent us feedback THANKS and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

omg we were techcrunched

We quietly made tipjoy.com live on Friday afternoon. It has been extremely helpful to get something up and running with real users. They've helped us find bugs, and motivate us to stay up all hours of the night fixing things as quickly as possible. We've also been able to improve the UI thanks to lots of great feedback.

As I write this we're on a plane to NY for the O'Reilly conference. We'll arrive in the hotel around 1am and have a short list of last minute fixes to work on before bed - that is, as long as there are no surprises in our inbox when we arrive!

We launch tomorrow. I already haven't slept much in the last few days and don't expect to again for a few more, until things settle down a bit. I'm bracing myself for the feedback - I'm confident there will be positive stuff, but as a fellow YC colleague told me, 'it takes 10 positive pieces of feedback to make up for that 1 bad one people leave.' Oh, and of course we hope the server doesn't crash and there aren't any devastating bugs :) This should be exciting.

time

Well, we still have 27 minutes left, but it looks like launching the alpha will be one day behind schedule. We're really almost there though!

We need to get it out there asap so that there's time for people to test it and let us know what's broken... and to give us time to fix it.

I hope there's nothing to fix, because there's really no time for it - we already have a list a mile long of what else to fix after alpha-ing and before Monday, when we need to be launched.

Despite all this I'm feeling good. I remade all the button assets (had to do it 3 times, thank you photoshop and svn), the site is working, and it's looking good.

26 minutes to go!

alpha release scheduled for tomorrow, Feb 6

Ivan is knocking bugs off the list left and right, (we're using fogbugz by the way, and it's great) and we're almost ready to make tipjoy live, and send out a notice that we're in alpha!

The tension is pretty high around here, but we're still giving ourselves a few moments for breaks - last night at 11pm we played a quick game of scrabble - Ivan bingoed with "aquired" and although it was misspelled, we let it slide. :)

Here's our itinerary for the next few days:
Alpha launch tomorrow, Feb 6 (happy 3 year wedding anniversary to us!)
Drive to LA on saturday
Fly on sunday to NYC
Attend the O'Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing conference (we're giving a 5 min lightning demo Monday night)
Meet with Fred Wilson at some point next week while in NY

about this blog

Welcome! Tipjoy makes it easy for people to leave tips for things they love online, and easy for content owners to be rewarded for making the stuff people love. Usually, we're located just outside of Boston, MA. However for the last few months we've been in Mountain View, CA taking part in Y Combinator's winter 2008 funding cycle.

Our blog is temporarily being hosted on blogspot, but eventually we'll be back at: http://tipjoy.com/our2cents/
