Tip via Twitter
Tipjoy is happy to announce even tighter integration with Twitter.
You can now initiate payments via twitter. For example, tweeting "p @ev $1 because twitter is fun" would send $1 from your Tipjoy account to @ev.
'p' is like 'd' but for payment, not direct messages - get it?
This is an opt-in feature. To try it out, add your twitter username and password in the tipjoy settings page and click the checkbox to opt-in:
http://tipjoy.com/settings
Then start tweeting.
We'll count anything that has an @username, dollar amount, and a
payment keyword in the first three words in any order. So "p @ev $1"
and "@ev pay $1" both work.
The payment keywords are 'tipjoy', 'tip', 'pay', 'give', 'rtip', and
'p'. Case doesn't matter, so 'give', 'GIVE', and 'giVE' all work.
What is 'rtip'? It's a retweet and a tip. If you really like a tweet,
retweet it and send the author some love.
For example, @badbanana just tweeted
"My will to live is somewhere in that coffee pot."
Such hilarity certainly deserves a dollar in my book, so I just tweeted
"rtip $1 @badbanana My will to live is somewhere in that coffee pot."

Can twitpay do this, too?
Tipjoy is different in a few ways.
- We don't mandate branding in the tweet. You can just use 'p'.
- We don't take a cut per tip, unlike their $0.05. That's 20% overhead on a $0.25 payment, which is high.
- We allow cash out. People receiving money in Twitpay currently can't cash out. We're hoping to enable this through cash out to a Tipjoy account.
Overall, the service is the same idea. Lots of people think there should be payments in twitter. We agree.
Hey, this is very cool! But I have one request to make it even better, and it should be quite easy to do:
I would totally love it if you added support for Laconica and identi.ca. identi.ca, at is an Free software/Open Source "Twitter clone" with a Twitter compatible API. That means that all you have to do is to change the URL of the Twitter API to the identi.ca API URL, and all your existing code for Twitter will work with identi.ca! If you'd set up @tipjoy on identi.ca too, that would be awesome! You can find a list of clients and services that works with identi.ca (and some of which can post to Twitter and identi.ca simultaneously, so it's not hard to keep both accounts updated). You will of course be added to this list if you decide to support identi.ca.
Laconica, at http://laconi.ca/, is the code that identi.ca runs, and anyone can install it on their own server, like Leo Laporte's very popular podcasting network TWiT has done with http://army.twit.tv/. The only thing you need to do to add support for any installation of Laconica, instead of just identi.ca, is to let the user herself tell you the URL of the API. For an example just look at how Twitterfeed does it.
I'd love to be open to other platforms, but it seems like this is very much in flux. I wouldn't want to spend time supporting them only for things to change. And by support, I don't mean the initial integration, but solving problems on other platforms that will inevitably come up.
Soon, I'd like to open an API so that, similar the way we've manually made it so tweets initiate payments, 3rd party services could get authorization to initiate payments based on actions on their platform. Then it would be up to the 3rd parties to get users to grant authorization.
This is why APIs rock. Tipjoy gets integrated into other platforms, and we don't need to do that much work.
